Location

Situated between north latitude 32° 11΄ 30″ and 33° 13΄ 6″, and east longitude 75°49΄and 77° 3΄ 30″  with J&K on the north-west and west; Lahaul and Bara Bhangal on the north-east and east; District of Kangra  on the south-east; district of Gurdaspur (Punjab) on the south .

Elevation

The district is wholly mountainous with elevation ranging from 2000 to 21000 ft.

Climate

Ranges from semi-tropical to semi-arctic.

Population 

Total population of Chamba is 460,499 (according to Census 2001)

Administrative Setup

Administratively, the district is divided into 6 sub-divisions, 7 Tehsils and 3 sub-Tehsils. From the view point of rural development, the district is divided into 6 development blocks. There are 270 Gram Panchayats in the district. Whole of development blocks Mehla, Salooni and Tissa have been declared backward, while 11 GPs and 17GPs of Chamba and Bhattiayt block respectively have been declared as dispersed backward panchayats. Bharmour and Pangi are tribal blocks.
