Moutain Passes

In the ancient time and before the construction of motor able roads the access to the region was only through passes over these Himalayan mountain ranges. These passes are still used by the local Gaddi tribe of the Brahampu region and by Gujjars, Pangwals and Bakarwals. PASSES IN THE DHAULADHAR RANGE 1.Chuari
or Basodhan Pass: Between
Chamba and Chuari; height 8000 ft. good motor able. 2.Kali
Nali Pass:
Between Mehla and Raipur; height 8,900 ft. easy road; one man. 3.Mahli
Pass:
Between Mehla and Tundi; height 8600 ft. easy road; one march. 4.Loa
Pass:
Between Mehla and Bhatti Tikkri; height 10500-ft. road rough but
easy; one march. 5.Bohar
Pass:
Between Bakan or Basu and boh in Kangra; height
11,602 feet; easy. 6.Baleni
Pass:
Between Basu or Piur and Dareni in Kangra; height
12000 feet; road rough but easy. 7.Gag, Bag or Bhim-Gasutri
Pass:
Between Kothi- Ranhu and Kareri;Height 13225 feet; one
place on the 8.Indrahar
Pass:
Between Kuarsi and Dharamshala; height 14150 ft.; early in the
year frozen snow near 9.Kundli
Pass:
Between Kuarsi and Khaniara; Height 14500 feet; easy but
little used. 10.Toral
Pass:
Between Lamu and Narwana; Height 14808 feet; little used
and only in the autumn by 11.Talang Pass: Between Holi and Narwana; Height 15500 feet; not difficult but seldom used. Note:The Bohar Pass is passable for unladed hill cattle; the other passes are used by the Gaddis with their flocks. These passes are all closed from December till April. Most of them take two days to cross 12.Singrahar

somewhat difficult. 13.Satnalo

Between Garoh and Bandla; Height 13800 feet; rather difficult. 14.Wahar
Pass:
Between Chanair and Bandla; Height 14101 feet; easy. 15.Sarai
Pass:
Between Sarai and Lanodh; Height 14082 feet; easy 16.Chobu
Pass:
Between Kukti and Bara Bangal; height 16,500 feet;
road rough and PASSES IN THE DAGANI DHAR IN ORDER FROM WEST 17.Padari
Pass:
Between Langera and Thanala; Height 10000 feet; easy and passable for ponies 18.Dagani
Pass:
Between Sangani Nala and Bhanencha Balesa; Height 12852 feet; easy but
descent into 19.Barari Pass: Between Makan and Jagesar; Height 12100 feet; easy two marches. 20.Mailwar Pass: Between Mangli and Manu; Height 113027 feet; fairly easy three marches. 21.Nerangwari
Pass:
Between Alwas and Nerangwari; Height 14742 feet; rough road three marches. Note:
The passes at Sr.No.17 to 19 are closed from December to April and
passes at Sr.
No. 20 & 21 from December till May. The Padari Pass is passable for
riding ponies but not for laden animals. PASSES IN THE MID HIMALAYA OR PANGI RANGE IN ORDER FROM THE NORTH WEST Note: The passes at Sr.No.22 to 25 are open from May till October; the passes at Sr.No.27,28 & 29 are open from June till September but chobia is often crossed in May. Between Tuan in Saichu Nala and Danlong Nala; Height 16500 feet; very
difficult PASSES IN THE WESTERN HIMALAYA OR ZANSKAR RANGE IN ORDER FROM THE NORTH WEST 33.Kag
Pass:
Between Danlong Nala in Padar and Bardan Gompa in Zanskar; Height 17500 34.Poat La Pass: Between Danlong Nala and Padar; Height 17500 feet; rough road, one day on snow. 35.Kang
La Pass:
Between Miyar Nala in Chamba Lahul and Bardan Gompa; Height 17500 feet;
road rough, Note: The Kag Pass and Poat La were just outside the State Territory, but were crossed by travelers from Pangi. 36.Tharang

Between Miyar Nala and Darcha in British Lahual; Height 17133 feet; 37.Gurdhar
